Just because a refining operation is no longer running doesnt mean you cannot find its products on the market still. Johnson Matthey was once one of the preeminent refiners of silver and gold bullion, but it ceased operations in 2016 when it sold its refining arm to Asahi Refining of Japan. Right now, you can buy 20 oz Silver Secondary Market Bars from Johnson Matthey online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
When you purchase 20 oz Silver Secondary Market bars through this listing, you will find that each one is secured inside of either a protective plastic sleeve or wrapped in protective material inside of a shipping box. Each one of these bars is a secondary market bar that does not come direct from the original manufacturer in this listing. It is important to note that while these bars could still be in the original packaging and present no detracting flaws, some could be repackaged and feature varying blemishes.
Obverse
These bars have designs only on one side of the specimen. The designs are simple as the goal of these bars is for investment. The top of the design field includes the JM initials of Johnson Matthey with the crossed hammers. Below that, you will find the weight inscribed as 20 oz, the purity inscribed as 999+, and an assayers mark in the lower-right field.
Reverse
Cast silver bars often feature design elements on only one surface because the bars are poured into a cast to cool and shape. While the bar is cooling, the inscriptions on the obverse are stamped in and the other field is pressed up against the case. This leaves no time to stamp inscriptions onto the reverse field.
History
Johnson Matthey was first formed in 1817 when Percival Norton Johnson set up a gold assayers business in London. In 1851, George Matthey joined him and the company was renamed Johnson & Matthey. One year later, the company became the Official Assayer & Refiner of the Bank of England.
