The obverse of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of America’s most iconic coinage designs. An image of Lady Liberty is shown striding forward with the rising sun in the background. She holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The U.S. Capitol is shown towards the lower left. The inscription “LIBERTY” appears at the top of the coin.
The coin’s reverse shows a flying eagle above a rising sun. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” appear towards the top of the reverse. On this particular issue, the legend “IN GOD WE TRUST” is placed at the base of the back right above the sun.
When World War I commenced, demand for the $20 Double Eagle declined significantly. Countries that often used the coin found themselves embroiled in battle. Even domestically, the economy softened during World War I and production of gold coins came to a screeching halt. A small quantity of American gold coins were made again in 1920 and 1921, but production levels wouldn’t fully recover until later that decade.
From a numismatic standpoint, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles of 1914-1916 are popular on two fronts. Having been made during World War I, they enjoy added desirability and appeal. Secondly, they have lower mintages and survival rates. Only a tiny percentage of all $20 Saints were made during this time period.
Each coin is delivered in a vinyl clear plastic “flip” for easy viewing and storage.
