Taken directly from sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ monument to General William T. Sheman in Central Park, the obverse depicts Lady Liberty striding toward the viewer from out of a rising sun. Her hair flows and she carries a torch and an olive branch. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY” and the year of issue.
The reverse captures an American Bald Eagle in flight above the rays of a rising sun. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
The idea for the Gold Double Eagle was imagined in 1905 when Theodore Roosevelt attended an exhibition of ancient Greek coins at the Smithsonian. He was greatly impressed by their artistic beauty and symbolic power, and he envisioned a new, improved generation of American coins that better represented the greatness of our country.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the most prominent sculptor and artist in the country at the time, readily agreed to the job once he learned of Roosevelt’s desire to rework the nation’s coinage. His work led to this Double Eagle $20 gold piece, along with other treasured American coins.
The coins in this category will have a randomized year of issue, depending on our current inventory. Each of them is in the condition of almost uncirculated or better.
Coins may come in plastic flips or tubes, depending on the quantity within your order.

Provident has good prices on these coins and I was glad to be able to buy one this year. I'm not an expert at all, but my coin seemed pretty banged up. The design is intact, but there a lot of surface scratches. Given the fairly low premium, I'm still happy to have it, but don't see how it could be AU."

Regardless, I'm thrilled to get these pieces of American history. The fact that they are also a great way to secure my wealth is just icing on the cake! I ordered 20, $20 St Gaudens. Provident means what it says in the title, AU OR BETTER. It doesn’t say that to protect itself in case there are picky customers who complain that the coins are not BU. Some of mine were AU and some were BU. Any of my future purchases will have this fact in mind.

I just received mine, a 1922 example. I’m not a coin-grading expert, but luster is high; only one small copper toning spot under the eagle’s wing; minimal surface scratches from handling; detail is flawless with no visible wear. From comparison examples on feeBay (all of which are of course priced higher), the grading appears correct, even conservative. The St. Gaudens Double Eagle may not be a bullion coin, or the absolute best value in relation to price vs. melt value, but anyone who collects coins or buys precious metals for investment should own one of these. It is considered the most beautiful American coin ever made for good reason. Next time I’d love to get a slabbed and graded one described in other reviews, but I’m entirely pleased with what I received.

Received a 1909 S. Was pleasantly surprised to get a MS 61 NGC graded coin! (I think that does qualify as “AU or Better!!”) A little luster lost on some of the high relief areas, but a really nice coin. Shipment arrived 21 days after mailing my cashier’s check, about 7-8 days longer than previous purchases, but was part of a larger order, and still quicker than I have gotten from other vendors. I will only purchase from Provident in the future.
