Designs

The US half dollar has been available every year dating back to 1794 when the Flowing Hair design debuted at the United States Mint. However, the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, and Capped Bust Liberty designs used between 1794 and 1838 did not have 90% silver content. Starting in 1839 with the debut of the Seated Liberty design, the US half dollar coins had 90% silver content.

In this listing, you are most likely to find the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar or Walking Liberty Half Dollars issued between 1916 and 1947. The Kennedy Half Dollar features a bust of President John F. Kennedy on the obverse and a modified US Great Seal on the reverse, with only the 1964 coin in this series issued in 90% silver. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was a popular design from Adolph A. Weinman and was issued by the US Mint with an image of Liberty walking toward the sun on the obverse and an American bald eagle on a cliff on the reverse.

Other possible designs in the 90% Silver Half Dollar program include the Seated Liberty design and the Barber Coinage design. The Seated Liberty was the longest-running in the series until being surpassed by the Kennedy design in the 21st century. Seated Liberty was on the coins from 1839 to 1891, while the Barber Coinage design was on the coins from 1892 to 1916.
