Design

The design of the 200 oz Silver Antique Finish Silver Soldiers Collection Sherman M4A1 Tank Statue includes Gunner Ed. The Sherman is running on its trusty treads with spare tank tracks attached to the front end of the tank for in-the-field repairs. Gunner Ed is shown sitting in the open hatch at the top to serve as both operator, guiding the tanks movements in the field as part of a broader mechanized unit, and as a gunner to run the machine gun if enemy infantry are encountered in the battle.

History

The Sherman M4A1 Tank was named for Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, the man best-known for leading the US Army on its path of destruction across the Confederacy in a bid to split the enemy with his drive from the Mississippi River to Savannah, Georgia, along the Atlantic Coast. The M4A1 was a medium tank and the Allied approach was to produce the tanks en masse to overcome the power of individual German tanks. America produced the tanks in large numbers and distributed them during the war to British and Soviet forces. The Sherman Tank would go on to see action in other armies during the Greek Civil War, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the Korean War, the Cuban Revolution, the Six-Day War, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and even the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s.
