The Australian Kookaburra was introduced by the Perth Mint in 1990 as part of its first silver bullion coin series. Alongside the Gold Kangaroo, the Kookaburra marked the beginning of the Mints use of changing reverse designs each year, showcasing Australias native wildlife. Today, Provident Metals offers 2000 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coins for purchase online.
Highlights:
These 2000 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coins are presented in plastic capsules for safekeeping. Although the maximum authorized mintage was 300,000 coins, final mintage totaled only 104,169 pieces. This marked a continued drop in demand for the series at the start of the 2000s. Just a few years earlier in 1997, mintage topped 150,000 coins.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2000 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin is a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth version of her likeness to appear on Australian currency and shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Inscriptions here include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2000 Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin highlights a kookaburra resting on a tree branch. Two main kookaburra species are native to Australia: the laughing kookaburra and the blue-winged kookaburra. The laughing kookaburra is larger, with a white head and brown eye-stripe, and is known for its call that sounds like laughter. The blue-winged kookaburra is smaller but stands out with electric blue feathers on its wings and a shorter, more abrupt vocalization. The inscriptions include THE AUSTRIALIAN KOOKABURRA, 1 OZ. 999 SILVER, and 2000.
History
A third, lesser-known kookaburra species is the rufous-bellied kookaburra. It resides in the far north of Queenslands Cape York Peninsula and is more common in New Guinea. Though not as prominent, this species adds to the diversity of the kookaburra family found across Australias ecosystems.
