The obverse face of 2000 Australian Lunar Dragon 1 oz Gold Coins bears the right-profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The fifth design to feature on Australian denominations, this image was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This particular tiara was gifted to her grandmother, Mary of Teck, upon her marriage to King George V.
Reverse
On the reverse field of the 2000 Australian Lunar Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin is an image of a Chinese dragon. In Chinese culture, dragons are often depicted as more of a serpent-like beast. The dragon has a long, slithering body with four or six legs, depending upon the cultural design, and no wings.

In the 21st century, the Perth Mint is up to three separate collections in total with lunar designs. The first included these 2000 Australian Lunar Dragon coins and was known as the Lunar Series I collection (1996-2007). The second collection was Lunar Series II (2008-2019) and the third is Lunar Series III which launched in 2020.
