The Chinese Gold Panda Series made its debut in 1982 and has remained a popular option for gold bullion buyers ever since. It was first released in four sizes1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 ozwith the 1/20 oz coin joining the lineup a year later. A key feature of the series is the annually changing image of the Giant Panda on the reverse. Provident Metals now has the 2000 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin available.
Highlights:
Each 2000 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coin comes sealed in a plastic pouch and had a limited mintage of just 20,811 pieces. This coin is also recognized as the final issue to carry the original face values used in the series, as the 2001 coins introduced updated denominations.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 2000 Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This landmark is part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and was used by emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties for agricultural ceremonies. The artwork includes the steps leading up to the structures tiered rooftop.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2000 Panda 1/2 oz Gold Coins, youll see a peaceful scene of a Giant Panda resting against a rock with bamboo surrounding it. Though pandas have the teeth and digestive system of a carnivore, they depend almost entirely on bamboo to survive. Because it provides limited nutrition, they must eat between 20 to 40 pounds each day.
History
Protecting the Giant Panda has long been a focus for conservationists, with efforts centered on saving bamboo forests and linking panda habitats to allow for movement and reproduction. The pandas specialized diet, despite its carnivorous roots, is a fascinating example of how species can adapt over time to rely on a specific food source in their environment.
