Born in Bedford County, Tennessee, Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821–1877) served as Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army. Uneducated, Forrest made his fortune in real estate and the slave trade.
Nicknamed the Wizard of the Saddle, General Forrest was a brilliant war strategist, perhaps most famous for his controversial command at the Battle of Fort Pillow. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee hailed Forrest’s service, saying the Confederacy did not take full advantage of Forrest's potential.
