Obverse

The obverse of the 2000 Lunar Dragon Privy Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins features a regal effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt in 1990, this right-profile relief portrait presents the Queen adorned with a necklace, earrings, and the George IV State Diadem Crown. Dora de Pedery-Hunt holds the distinction of being the first Canadian artist to create a monarch portrait for the Royal Canadian Mint, adding historical significance to this exquisite coin. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, and 2000.

Reverse

On the reverse, you’ll discover Walter Ott’s representation of the sugar maple leaf, which has become an iconic symbol of Canada. The design has been featured since the inception of the series. The design has remained largely unchanged. As a special tribute to the Lunar Year of the Dragon, a captivating dragon privy mark accompanies the maple leaf. Inscriptions include CANADA, 9999, 9999, FINE SILVER, 1 OZ, ARGENT PUR, and DRAGON.

History

The Royal Canadian Mint has a long-standing history as one of the world’s leading mints. Originally established in Ottawa in 1908 as the Royal Mint, it became the Royal Canadian Mint in conjunction with the Canadian Government during the Great Depression. In response to rising demand, a second location was opened in Winnipeg in the 1980s. Nowadays, the Winnipeg facility is responsible for all the coin production for other countries, while the Ottawa facility mainly handles the domestic side.
