The oldest mint in North America the Mexican Mint began producing the Mexican Libertad Silver Coin series in 1982, beginning with a 1 ounce size coin. Production of the 2 ounce size coin began in 1996. All coins contain .999 pure silver. Mintage numbers for the 2 ounce size reached 50,000 in 1996 but have not come close to that number again except in 2009, when mintage numbers reached 46,000. The low mintage numbers and the .999 pure silver make the 2 ounce Mexican Libertad Silver coin popular for collectors. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2000 Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver coin available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Received in a protective plastic flip!

  • Winged Victory on the reverse.
  • Minted a total of 7,500 coins in 2000.

While there is much Spanish influence in their culture and language, Mexico is very proud of its independence from Spain. This independence, which occurred in 1821, is celebrated and symbolized in the Mexican Libertad Silver coin series. The Mexican Libertad is one of the more popular modern coin series among collectors, a result of the high quality silver that is used to produce the coins.

Obverse

The obverse of the Mexican Libertad Silver coin depicts the current official Coat of Arms of Mexico. Encircling the current Coat of Arms are 10 past versions of the official Mexican Coat of Arms used throughout history. They all feature an eagle that most of the time has a snake in its mouth. The eagle is oftentimes perched on a cactus plant. The Coat of Arms is used to symbolize the founding of Mexico City. The lone inscription on the obverse is ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

The reverse of the Mexican Libertad Silver coin features Mexico Citys Winged Victory statue. The statue represents Mexicos continuing independence from Spain. In the background are 2 Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. According to Aztec mythology, the legend exists of a love story between princess Iztaccihuatl and the brave warrior Popocatepetl. The princess is told that her warrior lover had been defeated, thus she died of heartbreak. So that the 2 lovers could be together, the Gods turned the princess and the warrior into these 2 volcanoes. Inscriptions on the reverse are 2 ONZAS, PLATA PURA, 2000, and LEY .999.

History

The Mexican Libertad Silver series was minted in just the 1 ounce size when introduced in 1982. By 1991, mintage was expanded to include 4 additional sizes – the 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/2 ounce sizes. Five years later, mintage was again expanded to include the 2 ounce and 5 ounce sizes. And finally, the 1 kg size was added in 2008, although they were not minted in either 2013 or 2014. In addition to bullion coins, the Mexican Libertad Silver series includes proof, reverse proof, and antique finish versions. All sizes and versions are minted in .999 pure silver.
