The Gold Panda Series from the Chinese Mint began in 1982, offering investors and collectors a new annual release of gold coins. Initially, these coins were struck in weights based on the Troy ounce system, including 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. In 1983, a 1/20 oz coin joined the lineup. The series is known for its rotating panda designs on the obverse, which change almost every year. Provident Metals now has the 2001 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.
Highlights:
These 2001 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coins come individually sealed in plastic pouches. The 2001 edition was the first time the Chinese Mint adjusted the face value of the 1/4 oz gold coin, increasing it from 25 Yuan to 100 Yuan.
Obverse
The front of the 2001 Chinese Panda Gold Coin presents an image of a Giant Panda on all fours, walking calmly through a bamboo forest. Pandas have a very predictable lifestyle centered around their food sourcebamboo. They typically spend 12 to 16 hours each day munching through large amounts of bamboo, anywhere from 26 to 84 pounds daily.
Reverse
Flipping the 2001 Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin over, you’ll see the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This well-known building is part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and has appeared on the reverse of Gold Panda coins since 1982. The design shows the hall from below, looking up the staircase toward its central entrance.
History
When not eating, pandas often take naps that last a few hours. You might find them lounging on the ground, leaning against a rock or tree, with their legs stretched out in a relaxed pose. The rest of their day includes small bursts of activity such as climbing, grooming, or finding new bamboo patches. They are most active early in the morning and in the evening, moving around their forest habitat in search of tender new bamboo shoots. Pandas may look heavy, but they are agile enough to climb trees when necessary.
