In 2001, the United States Mint revived one of its most beloved designs for the first time since 1936. To honor the Smithsonian Institutions National Museum of the American Indian, the US Mint issued Proof and BU Buffalo Silver Dollars featuring James Earle Frasers iconic Buffalo Nickel design. These 2001-D Buffalo Dollar Silver Coins come in near-perfect condition. Mint State 69 coins exhibit full, original mint luster and have no more than two minor imperfections. These slight flaws could include tiny contact marks or hairlines, which must be outside the primary focal points of the coin. The US Mint issued a total of 500,000 coins, with proof specimens from the Philadelphia Mint and Brilliant Uncirculated coins from the Denver Mint. Each coin is made of 90% silver and 10% copper.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2001-D Buffalo Dollar Coin features James Earle Frasers depiction of a stoic indigenous figure. Created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel, this design shows the figure in right-profile relief and is said to have been inspired by the facial features of three real-world indigenous leaders from the early 20th century. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, 2001, and Fraser’s F initial.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2001-D Buffalo Dollar Silver Coins shows the American bison. Also designed by Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, this image shows the bison in left-profile relief on a small mound of land. The design was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. The inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and the D mint mark.

History

The 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar commemorates the National Museum of the American Indian. Established by an Act of Congress in 1989, the museum practices a collaborative curation model, working closely with Native communities to present their stories and artifacts. This approach, known as “community curation,” allows indigenous peoples to have a voice in how their cultures are represented.
