Obverse
The Statue of Liberty’s face, a design created by John Mercanti, appears on the obverse of the 2001 Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins. Introduced in 1997, this design portrays the famous New York Harbor statue’s visage. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2001, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2001 1/2 oz Proof Platinum Eagles features an image of the American bald eagle. As part of the Vistas of Liberty Series, this design displays the eagle in flight over different parts of the country. This particular design shows the eagle soaring over the saguaro cactus in the American Southwest and is the penultimate design in the series. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, .9995 PLATINUM, 1/2 OZ., $50, and the W mint mark.
History
The Proof American Eagle Platinum Coin was issued by the United States Mint from 1997 to 2008 with fractional-ounce options. As of 2009, only the 1 oz coin has been offered. This 2001 release was the fourth design of five in the Vistas of Liberty Series from the mint.
