Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse face of the 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, this image depicts Liberty in front-facing relief with a torch held out in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.

A family of American bald eagles is depicted on the reverse of the 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. Created in 1986 specifically for this series, Miley Busiek developed an image of a family nest with a female eagle and young hatchling in the nest as a male eagle flies over the family nest.

Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were introduced between 1986 and 1988. The 1986 issue featured only the 1 oz coin, with these 1/2 oz gold coins introduced in 1987. The 1988 release featured the final two coins: 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins. Each American Eagle Gold Coin has 91.67% gold content with 5.33% copper and 3% silver making up the remaining metallic alloy.

The 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin ships with a sealed protective plastic slab from the PCGS.
