History

The American Gold Eagle Coin collection was first released in 1986, starting with the production of the 1 oz coin. Fractional coins in the series, like this 1/2 oz weight denomination, werent made until 1987, and they were actually struck at the Philadelphia location of the U.S. Mint. After the year 1993, the production of fractional weights in this series was transferred to the West Point Mint, allowing for all American Gold Eagle coins to be produced in one place.

Obverse

The image of Lady Liberty is shown on the obverse of the 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. In the design, which was created by artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Lady Liberty paces forward with sun rays extending out into the sky behind herlikely to highlight her radiance. In her hands, Lady Liberty carries a torch and an olive branch.

Reverse

A family of eagles is shown on the reverse of the 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin, which was designed by artist Miley Busiek. In the image, a female eagle waits with her eaglets inside a nest for the male to arrive. The male flies overhead with wings stretched wide, carrying an olive branch in its talons.
