This modern depiction of the seal was created in 1986 by John Mercanti, a US Mint engraver and artist who would go on to serve as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

History

The 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin enjoyed a significant boost in demand due in large part to the first issue of the coin with a W mint mark. The coins in the proof series had been produced by the San Francisco Mint from 1986 to 1992 and the Philadelphia Mint from 1993 to 2000. The 2001 release was the first at the West Point Mint with the W mint mark. As a result, mintage jumped by 146,000 coins and promptly fell by 100,000 coins in 2002.
