Coins with a PR70 grade showcase full, original mint luster and present with no detracting flaws on the surface areas or design elements. The included DCAM designation stands for deep-cameo. This means the coins have strong, frosted designs that combine with deeply-mirrored, clear fields to create unique visual brilliance.

Obverse

The obverse of 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins comes with a design known as Walking Liberty. Featured on the circulation US half dollar from 1916 to 1947, Walking Liberty was created by Adolph A. Weinman to depict the nations desire for a peaceful future in the midst of World War I. Liberty walks toward the bright sun on the horizon carrying the branches of oak and laurel. The American flag is draped over her shoulders as she does so.

Reverse

On the reverse side of all 2001-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins, you will find the heraldic eagle of the United States. This modern version of the design was created in 1986 by John Mercanti and features as its unique aspect a triangular cluster of 13 stars above the head of the American bald eagle.

History

The 2001 release of the Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin provided an anomaly in the mintage of the coins. The figure jumped 146,000 coins from 2000 and would fall again in 2002 by nearly 100,000 coins. The result is due in large part to the change in the coining venue. The 2001 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin is the first in the collection produced at the West Point Mint with the W mint mark.
