Volcanoes are creatures of legend in Aztec mythology. According to the story, Iztaccihuatl was a princess who fell in love with the warrior Popocatepetl. He was sent to war in Oaxaca, but not before the emperor — Iztaccihuatl’s own father — promised Popocatepetl that he could marry her upon his return. Of course, the emperor expected Popocatepetl never to come back.
The emperor lied to his daughter, telling her Popocatepetl died in battle. She was so overcome with grief that she died of a broken heart. The dormant volcano that bears her name is sometimes called “White Woman,” because it resembles a sleeping woman covered in snow.
The volcano Popocatepetl is active, said to be furious that his betrothed left the world because of her father’s lie.
