The Australian Kookaburra silver series holds the title as the longest-running bullion collection from the Perth Mint. First launched in 1990, it was one of the Perth Mints original bullion programs, alongside the Gold Kangaroo, to showcase new reverse designs each year featuring Australian wildlife. Provident Metals now offers the 2002 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2002 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin available here comes in a plastic capsule for protection. Although the Perth Mint had set a maximum mintage of 300,000 coins, sales in 2002 totaled just 91,604 coins, marking a shift toward lower mintage levels in the series during the early 2000s.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2002 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin, youll find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile relief shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, representing the fifth depiction of Her Majesty used on Australian coins. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2002 Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin shows a kookaburra in flight with the Australian continent outlined behind it. These birds are highly adaptable, thriving not only in native forests and woodlands but also in city parks and suburban neighborhoods throughout Australia. Inscriptions read AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2002, and 1 OZ. 999 SILVER.
History
Kookaburras are a well-known bird species across Australia, especially along the eastern and southern coasts. The laughing kookaburra is common from Cape York Peninsula through New South Wales and Victoria, while the blue-winged kookaburra is mainly found across northern Australia from Western Australias Kimberley region to Queensland.
