The Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin was introduced in 1989 by the Austrian Mint and has since become one of the most sought-after coins in the world, regularly recognized as Europes best-selling gold coin. The series started with 1 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins, which initially featured face values in Austrian schillings. In 2002, the coins transitioned to Euro denominations. You can currently find 2002 Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz Gold Coins available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective flip!
  • 14th year for Gold Philharmonic Coins!
  • First issue with Euro denominations!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of 100 Euros is fully backed by the Austrian government.
  • Obverse features the Great Pipe Organ in the Musikverein.
  • Reverse includes a collection of musical instruments.

Every 2002 Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz Gold Coin available here comes with a protective plastic flip. The 1 oz coin is the longest-running weight in the series alongside the 1/4 oz gold coin. Since its introduction in 1989, the 1 oz Gold Philharmonic has maintained the same designs created by Thomas Pesendorfer.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2002 Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coin, you will see the Great Pipe Organ, a well-known fixture in the Golden Concert Hall located in the Musikverein. The Musikverein hosts several concert halls, but the Golden Concert Hall is best known for performances by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The inscriptions include REPUBLIC OSTERREICH, 1 UNZE GOLD 999.9, 2002, and 100 EURO.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2002 Philharmonic 1 oz Gold Coin showcases an array of musical instruments. This design features a cello at the center, flanked by two violins, with a backdrop of a French horn, bassoon, and harp. Inscriptions here include WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.

History

From 1989 to 2001, the Austrian Philharmonics were issued with face values in Austrian schillings, the former currency of Austria. With the Euro’s adoption in 2002, the Austrian Mint updated the face values to reflect this new currency. However, these coins are only legal tender within Austria.
