Designs
Obverse imagery on the coins in the 2002 US Mint Proof Quarter Sets include a left-profile portrait of President George Washington. This effigy of Washington, the first President of the United States of America, was designed in 1932 and has featured on all US quarters since that time. For the reverse field of the coins in these 2002 US Mint Proof Quarter Sets, the mint features individual designs for the states of Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi.
History
The State Quarters Program was so successful in its 10-year run that the US Mint immediately followed it up with the 2009 District of Columbia and US Territories Program. After the success of these two collections, the US Mint then introduced the America the Beautiful Series, a 56-coin collection that combined the two approaches of the previous series with 5 oz silver bullion coins.
