From the late 1990s to the early 2000s, the Proof Gold Eagle Series saw decreased demand as interest in the BU version of the coin soared. The 2002 release had one of the lowest mintages for the 1 oz gold coin in the programs history. Today, you have the opportunity to get 2002-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a capsule, US Mint box, and a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • 17th year of release in the Proof American Eagle Gold Series!
  • Announced mintage of just 27,499 gold coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $50 (USD) is backed by the United States of America.
  • On the obverse is Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse side features a family of bald eagles.
  • Bears a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.

In 2002, the Proof American Eagle Gold Series remained relatively steady from a demand standpoint compared to previous years. The 1 oz gold coin in the series was around 800 coins higher than the lowest issue of the year, the 1/2 oz gold coin. The 1/10 oz gold coin was the most popular with a mintage of over 40,000.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2002-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and first featured on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. In this image, Liberty is in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Inscriptions on this side read LIBERTY, 2002, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 2002 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin comes with an image of bald eagles. Designed in 1986 by Miley Busiek, this visual shows a male eagle soaring over the nest as a female eagle within the nest guarding hatchlings. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1 OZ FINE GOLD 50 DOLLARS.

History

Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were first issued in 1986, with only the 1 oz gold coin available in that first year. The fractional-ounce coins were introduced in 1987 and 1988, with the 1/2 oz gold coin introduced first, followed by the 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins.
