The Somalian Silver Elephant Series of silver coins is an incredibly popular collection that was first known as the African Elephant Series of silver bullion coins. Originating in 1999, and called as the Zambian Silver Elephant series, these coins were issued between 1999 and 2003. The 2002 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and is considered legal tender backed by the Bank of Zambia. These coins are highly collectible, particularly by those who enjoy collecting coins with images of African wildlife on them. The coins in the series were just issued in a 1 oz option.

Highlights:

  • Delivered secured in a protective plastic capsule!
  • 4th design in the Zambian silver elephant series!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Face value of 5,000 Kwacha, backed by the Bank of Zambia.
  • Obverse features African Elephant design.
  • Reverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Struck by the Bavarian State Mint of Germany, the original African Elephant Series of coins was issued for Zambia in 1999. At the time, there was just a 1 oz silver bullion coin offered at the time. The modern collection, issued for the nation of Somalia, features the 1 oz silver coin, the proof version, and also bullion and proof gold versions of the coin.

It was in 2002 that the Bavarian State Mint redid the imagery that was featured on the reverse of the2002 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin. After using the Zambian coat of arms between 1999 to 2001, the mint started featuring the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in Britain.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2002 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin features the 2002 African elephant design. This new design includes the image of two adult African elephants. Emerging from the left of the design, the larger adult rests its trunk atop the forehead and top of the head on a smaller adult elephant visible on the right.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2002 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majestys right-profile portrait was brought to life in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. 2002 was the first time that it appeared on the Zambian Silver Elephant coin.

The Bavarian State Mint was first established over 800 years ago. Today it is owned by the state government of the Free State of Bavaria. The mints also serves as one of the primary production facilities in Germany.
