As a top seller across the globe, the American Gold Eagle Coin collection has remained a fan favorite among collectors and investors of bullion products for many years. This collection is known for featuring stellar imagery to help represent the patriotism of the United States. This series is back again for 2003 with another wonderful release that collectors everywhere will definitely want to get their hands on. Right now, the 2003-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin is available for purchase from Provident Metals.
The 2003-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin was originally struck by the West Point Mint, which is indicated by the W mint mark included on one side of the coin. The Mint created this coin with 22 karats of actual gold, including a perfect metal balance of the following: 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. A special proof finish is also included on this coin, indicating that the designs themselves are shown as frosted, while the backgrounds are mirrored. This type of finish allows the viewer to enjoy a higher visual contrast.
Bullion releases from the American Gold Eagle Coin series first began in 1986 with the 1 oz gold coin. Fractional weights were introduced in the following year, but they were being produced at that time at the Philadelphia Mint. Following the year 1993, the production of all weight denominations in the series was transferred to the West Point Mint to allow for all coins to be struck in one location.
On the obverse of the 2003-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin is the image of Lady Liberty, which was originally taken from the Double-Eagle coin design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This obverse design has been the featured imagery on the American Gold Eagle coin since the series was first released. In the design, Lady Liberty walks forward with both arms outstretched, one hand holding a torch while the other holds an olive branch.
On the reverse of the 2003-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin is the eagle family design originally created by artist Miley Busiek. In this design, a male eagle is seen flying overhead and carrying an olive branch in its talons. The female eagle and eaglets sit waiting in the nest for the male to arrive.
