The Australian Silver Kookaburra series was first introduced by the Perth Mint in 1990 and has since become a favorite for collectors and investors alike. Each year brings a fresh reverse design showing the kookaburra in new poses and surroundings, making the series both recognizable and varied. Today, you can add the 2004 Australian Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin to your collection from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2004 Australian Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip and comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. While the 2 oz size had no set mintage limit in 2004, final production closed at 13,969 coins. This total exceeded the 1 Kilo and 10 oz sizes, but the 1 oz Silver Kookaburra reached the highest number of coins for that year.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2004 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin displays Ian Rank-Broadleys detailed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She is shown in right-profile wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Around the design are inscriptions of her name, the issuing nation, and the face value. This effigy appeared on Australian currency from 1998 to 2017. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 2 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 2004 Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin features a design with two birds. In the foreground, one kookaburra is perched calmly on a branch, while in the background another bird is captured in mid-flight. Inscriptions read THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2 OZ. 999 SILVER, and 2004.
History
Kookaburras are known for their strong territorial behavior and limited dispersal. Younger birds often stay within their parents territory as helpers before eventually settling in nearby areas. Historically, the laughing kookaburra lived only in eastern and southeastern Australia, but human introductions expanded its range to Tasmania in the early 1900s and southwestern Western Australia around the same time.
