Manufactured by the Perth Mint, the 2004 Australian Kookaburra silver coin is part of the Kookaburra Series, introduced in 1990 and continuing through 2013. The 2004 Kookaburra is a 1 oz coin, although the series is known for its 2 oz., 10 oz. and 1 kilo coins as well. Consisting of .999 fine silver, the round measures approximately 40.6 mm in diameter and 4 mm in thickness, with a weight of 31 grams. Coins arrived packaged in airtight, plastic capsules.
The obverse features sculptor Raphael Maklouf’s profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, an image seen on a variety of coins used in Commonwealth nations. In addition, the words “QUEEN ELIZABETH” and “AUSTRALIA” as well as the face value, 1 Dollar, are included.
The reverse features the Kookaburra, a bird native to Australia and New Guinea, categorized as a tree kingfisher. Kookaburras are commonly associated with their resonating call which mimics that of human laughter. In addition to being a beloved species of the Australian people, the Kookaburra has been featured on a variety of Australian coinage and stamps as well as being one of three featured mascots at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The reverse shows two Kookaburras, one perched on a branch, the other flying in the distance. In addition, the words “THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA,” “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER,” and the date of mintage, “2004,” encircle the outer rim of the coin.
