The Australian Kookaburra is the Perth Mints longest-running silver bullion series. First introduced in 1990, it was among the Mints first bullion coins to feature an annually changing design of a native Australian animal. Today, 2004 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2004 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coin comes packaged inside a protective plastic capsule. While the authorized mintage limit was set at 300,000 coins, actual production reached only 84,455. This continued the trend of falling mintage numbers for the Kookaburra series in the early 2000s, with sales dropping by about 20,000 since the 2000 issue.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2004 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin, youll find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This version of the Queens effigy is the fifth design used on Australian coins, showing her wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse of 2004 Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Coins shows a perched kookaburra sitting on a tree branch while another kookaburra flies above. Kookaburras share a lot of activities as pairs, including grooming each other, defending their territory, and coordinating their movements. Over time, some pairs even develop their own special vocal patterns that set them apart from other birds. The inscriptions read THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 1 OZ. 999 SILVER, and 2004.
History
Kookaburras are famous for forming lifelong bonds with their mates. These birds stay in the same territory throughout the year, not just during breeding seasons. They often perform their well-known “laughing” calls together, which helps strengthen their bond and signal to other birds that the territory is taken.
