The Royal Mint first launched the Silver Britannia Series in 1998, offering a new way for collectors to appreciate the image of Britannia on British coinage. In the early years, the mint alternated between Philip Nathans 1987 design and new images released in odd-numbered years. By 2012, the series moved exclusively to Nathans portrait each year. Today, 2004 British Britannia 1 oz Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 2004 British Britannia 1 oz Silver Coins listed here ship in protective plastic flips. The 2004 mintage was 57,000 coins, placing it midrange for the early years of the series. For perspective, the lowest mintage came in 2002 at 36,543 coins, while the highest was in 2010 with 129,086 coins.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2004 British Britannia Silver Coin is the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this right-facing image shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, a familiar design on coins of this era. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, DG REG FD, and 2 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2004 Britannia 1 oz Silver Coin carries Nathans original 1987 Britannia design. It shows Britannia in a Corinthian helmet, holding a trident in her right hand while her left hand rests on a shield with the Union Jack and holds an olive branch. The inscriptions read BRITANNIA, 2004, ONE OUNCE, and FINE SILVER.
History
Britannia has been part of British coinage since Roman times, moving from a symbol of conquest to one of naval dominance and national pride. Her image has evolved into that of a steady guardian, reflecting Britains cultural and political values over time.
