It was the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 that authorized the American Eagle Gold coins. This Act guaranteed that the coins would contain the declared amount of actual gold weight in troy ounces and the gold would come from sources within the US. The Gold Eagles are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, or 1/10 oz weights. Mintage numbers for the 1 oz and 1/10 oz have always been the most popular, with the 1 oz coins generally leading the way. There have been a few years where the 1/10 oz mintage number did surpass the 1 oz coin. Mintage of 1/10 oz Gold Eagles increased from 250,016 in 2004 to 300,043 in 2005, while mintage of the other 3 weights decreased for the same time. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2005 American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold coin available for purchase.
Highlights:
The beginning of the 21st Century saw the price of gold embark on a steady climb. By the end of 2005, the price of gold had closed higher 5 years in a row. In 2005, the price of gold began the year at $427.75 per ounce, moving very little during the first half of the year. In the second half of the year, the price started climbing and late in the year surpassed $500 per ounce, a feat not seen since 1987. The price of gold closed the year at $513.00 per ounce, which was an increase of over 17% from 2004s closing price.
Obverse
The American Eagle Gold obverse features the Augustus Saint-Gaudens created full-length figure of Lady Liberty. She is striding towards you, her hair flowing behind her. Her outstretched right hand is carrying a torch and her left hand is holding an olive branch. A depiction of the Capitol building is on the lower portion of the coin, near her right foot. Fifty stars encircle the coin. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2005.
Reverse
The American Eagle Gold reverse features the Miley Busiek family of eagles design that was sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. This design only appears on the American Eagle Gold coins, and symbolizes the importance of family in America. Clutching an olive branch, a bald eagle flies towards a nest occupied by a family of eagles. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS.
History
The year 1904 found President Theodore Roosevelt commissioning new designs for US coinage. He selected the talented Irish-born Augustus Saint-Gaudens to accomplish this task. Saint-Gaudens’ initial design was an ultra high-relief $20 gold piece. Only 12,317 of these were minted in 1907, and they remain highly sought after today. This design was modified to a normal-relief version, which was minted from 1907 to 1933. The Lady Liberty design of that coin is what now appears on the American Eagle Gold coins of today.
