The American Eagle Gold coins were first issued in 1986, and were available in bullion, proof, and burnished coins. It was only the bullion version that had all 4 weights – 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz – available immediately. The Gold Bullion Act of 1985, which authorized the American Eagle Gold coins, guaranteed that the coins would contain the declared amount of actual gold weight in troy ounces and the gold would come from sources within the US. The 1 oz and 1/10 oz coins have always been the most popular Gold Eagles. The mintage total for the 2005 1/4 oz Gold Eagle was 72,015, making it the lowest of the 4 weights. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2005 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold coin available for purchase.

In 2005, the price of gold began the year at $427.75 per ounce, but did not really move much till later in the year. The price eventually surpassed $500 per ounce, a feat not seen since 1987. The price of gold closed the year at $513.00 per ounce, which was an increase of over 17% from the closing price in 2004.

Obverse

The obverse of the American Eagle Gold is the full-length figure of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Lady Liberty is directly facing you, with her hair flowing behind her. She is carrying a torch in her outstretched right hand a torch being a symbol of enlightenment. She is holding an olive branch in her left hand an olive branch representing the countrys wish for peace. To the left of her feet is a depiction of the Capitol building. Fifty stars encircle the outer rim of the coin. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2005.

Reverse

The reverse of the American Eagle Gold is the family of eagles created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. A bald eagle, carrying an olive branch in its claws, is flying towards a nest occupied with an eagle family. Considered to be the king of birds of prey, the bald eagle symbolizes strength. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.

History

It was 1904 and President Theodore Roosevelt wanted a new design to rejuvenate the nations coinage. He selected Irish-born Augustus Saint-Gaudens to do this. The Lady Liberty design was the result of his work. It was initially created for the $20 Gold Double Eagles, which were minted from 1907 to 1933. It was a version of that Lady Liberty design that was selected to be the obverse of the American Eagle Gold coins.
