The Rooster represents the tenth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Those born in Rooster years are often associated with traits like hard work, punctuality, and confidence. The Perth Mint introduced its Lunar Series in 1996, now extending to its third series as of 2020. Currently, Provident Metals offers the 2005 Australian Lunar Rooster 1/2 oz Silver Coins for purchase.
Highlights:
Initially beginning with gold coins, the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series commenced in 1996 with Lunar Series I. This was followed by Lunar Series II in 2008 and Lunar Series III in 2020. Silver coins were introduced to the series in 1999, expanding its variety.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2005 Lunar Rooster 1/2 oz Silver Coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile relief depicts her adorned with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, a design crafted in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, commonly used on Australian coins until 2018-2019. The inscriptions read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 50 CENTS.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2005 Australian Lunar Rooster Silver Coins, a rooster is portrayed standing in left-profile relief, gazing backward over its shoulder. The scene is complemented by a stylized flower and imagery of the sun and clouds in the background. The inscriptions include 2005, 1/2 OZ 999 SILVER, and the Chinese emblem for the rooster.
History
According to Chinese astrology, the Rooster year is considered a year of progress and new opportunities. It is believed to be a favorable time for career advancement, starting new ventures, and taking calculated risks. However, it may also bring challenges related to communication and interpersonal relationships.

These 2005 Australian Lunar Rooster 1/2 oz Silver Coins are securely housed in protective plastic capsules. With a limited mintage for the 2005 release, this 1/2 oz silver coin stands as the smallest BU silver coin within this series from the Perth Mint.
