History

The Austrian Mint is a subsidiary of Austrias central bank and is located in Landstrasse, Vienna. The countrys minting history has an intriguing origin story as well involving Austrias Duke Leopold IV and Richard the Lionheart. Richard had been captured by the duke after the crusades in 1194 and paid 15 tons of silver in exchange for his release. With so much silver on hand, Leopold decided to mint coins with the bounty.
