African Wildlife Series Elephant silver coins debuted in 1999 as the Zambian Elephant coin. From 1999 to 2003, the coins were produced by the Bavarian State Mint for this nation with new images of the African elephant on the reverse each year and the same design on the obverse each year, that of the national emblem. Starting in 2004, the coins were issued as the Somalia Elephant with the reverse design focusing still changing each year, and the obverse now depicting the national emblem of Somalia rather than Zambia.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2005 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver coins is the image of the Somali coat of arms. The national seal includes a background field of horizontal lines on a crowned shield that features a single star at its center. The shield is supported by leopards with spears, fern leaves, and a ribbon included in the design element. Inscriptions include Somali Republic, 2005, and 1,000 Shillings.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2005 Somalia Elephant Silver Coin features a distinctive image of the African bush elephant that is unique to the 2005 date mark. In this design, the elephants head is shown in left-profile relief with its trunk raised up above its head and curled in an S-shape. The elephants body appears to emerge from beneath the canopy of a tree in the foreground, with taller trees depicted in the distant background.
