In 2005, the US Mint offered 2 Silver Proof Sets. The first set, issued in early February, was the 2005 State Quarters proof set of 5 quarters, struck in 90% silver. It was priced at $23.95. The full annual Silver Proof Set was issued starting in early June. This contained the 90% silver Roosevelt Dime and Kennedy Half Dollar, the Lincoln Cent and Sacagawea Dollar, and the 2 new Westward Journey Jefferson Nickels. It was priced at $37.95. The packaging for the 2005 Silver Proof Sets continues the theme created in 1999 when the State Quarters series was added to the Proof Set. The State Quarters are in one holder while the annual coins are in another. The color scheme of the Silver Proof Set is a red background to distinguish them from the regular Proof Sets with their blue background.

Designs

The 2005 Silver Proof Set includes 11 coins, housed in 2 separate plastic holders. One holder contains the coins of the original Silver Proof Set – the Lincoln Cent, the Roosevelt Dime, the Kennedy Half Dollar, the Sacagawea Dollar, and the 2 Westward Journey Jefferson nickels. These nickels display a new obverse design as well as 2 new reverse designs for the American Buffalo and Ocean in View. The second holder contains the 2005 coins of the Statehood series representing California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia.

History

The Silver Proof Set was introduced by the US Mint in 1992. The initial set consisted of the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar, all of which were struck in 90% silver, and the Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel, which were the same coins as found in the regular proof set. The Silver Proof Sets remained basically unchanged until 1999, when the State Quarters series was added to the set. Each year for the next 10 years, 5 different Quarters from the State Quarters series were included in the set. All 50 State Quarters were struck in 90% silver. With the increase in the number of coins and the face value of the sets, the original issue price was increased. The price increase in 1999 took the set to $31.95 from $21.00. The addition of the State Quarters also provided a boost to the annual mintage numbers for the Silver Proof Sets.
