2006 was known as the Year of Mozart because it marked the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birth. “High School Musical” soundtrack was the top-selling album and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” was the highest grossing movie of 2006. Those anniversaries and facts are unique to that year, but investors and collectors around the globe were more interested in another anniversary – the 20th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle, America’s official silver bullion coin.
The celebration launched the American Silver Eagle 3-coin 20th Anniversary Set, which contained a NGC authenticated 2006 W MS70, 2006 P Reverse Proof PF70 and a 2006 W PF70 Ultra Cameo. Each coin contains 1 oz. of .999 fine silver.
The obverse design of each coin, one that is arguably the most beautiful ever produced, is Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty. It features Lady Liberty in full-length striding toward a new day carrying laurel and oak branches with stars and stripes flying in the breeze beside her. The patriotic design was initially created for the Walking Liberty half dollars that were produced from 1916-1947. Due to its beloved design, it was revived on the American Silver Eagle coins that were first released on November 24, 1986.
A spread-winged heraldic eagle behind a shield flies on the reverse that was designed by John Mercanti. The eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows while holding a scroll in its beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Thirteen stars representing the Thirteen Colonies float above the design. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the coin’s weight and fineness are inscribed on the reverse as well.
The Reverse Proof Silver Eagle features a frosted background and mirrored surface that is different from a typical proof coin in the series. Each coin is stunning and makes a perfect addition to a portfolio or collection.
