The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Silver Kookaburra series in 1990, and it remains one of the most collected silver bullion programs worldwide. Each release features a new reverse design of the kookaburra, a bird well known across Australia, giving collectors something different each year. Right now, you can purchase the 2006 Australian Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2006 Australian Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and comes in a protective flip. While the mintage was technically unlimited, final sales totaled 12,802 coins. That figure placed the 2 oz coin second in mintage for the year, just behind the 1 oz version.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2006 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin features Ian Rank-Broadleys portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. It was one of the longest-used images of Her Majesty on Commonwealth coins, struck between 1998 and 2017. The inscriptions here read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 2 DOLLARS.
Reverse
For the reverse of 2006 Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coins, the Perth Mint created a design that highlights two kookaburras together. The birds are perched side by side on a small branch, with beaks open and heads raised, a fitting reference to their famous laughing call that echoes across the landscape. Inscriptions here read THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2 OZ. 999 SILVER, and 2006.
History
There are four kookaburra species in Australia, all part of the tree kingfisher family. Unlike many kingfishers, they rarely hunt fish and instead feed mostly on land-based prey. The laughing kookaburra, native to the east and introduced to the southwest, is the largest and most widely recognized. Its humanlike laugh is one of the most distinct sounds of the Australian bush.
