One of the stipulations of the Gold Bullion Act of 1985, which authorized the American Eagle Gold coin series, requires the gold used in the coin to be mined from sources in the US or in a US territory. It must also be used within one year after the month it was mined. Thus the American Eagle Gold coins are struck in 91.67% US-mined gold. To increase their durability, the gold is combined with 3% silver and 5.33% copper.

Obverse

The Double Eagle design of Lady Liberty, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, is featured on the 2006-W Proof American Eagle Gold obverse. This full-length figure of Lady Liberty is striding towards you, with her hair flowing behind her. She is carrying a torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her extended left hand. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2006.

Reverse

The king of the birds of prey, the Bald Eagle, is featured on the 2006-W Proof American Eagle Gold reverse. This design was created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. It features a male bald eagle, flying towards a nest where a female eagle and an eaglet are waiting. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.

History

The US Mint did not issue the 1/4 oz Proof American Eagle Gold coins until 1988, two years after the series introduction. Sales of the 1/4 oz Proof Eagle Golds started strong with 98,028 coins sold in 1988, but have been on a roller coaster ride of fluctuating sales since. In 2006, the Mint sold only 36,127 1/4 oz Proof Eagle Gold coins. Increased worldwide demand for precious metals in the late 2000s forced the US Mint to not issue any Proof coins in 2009.
