Originally introduced in 1986, the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle became the countrys official bullion programs. To celebrate two decades of these iconic coins, the Mint issued a special anniversary set of Silver Eagles. Each coin in these certified 2006-W Proof American Eagle 3-Coin Silver Sets is secured in a protective slab and graded Mint State or Proof 69 by NGC. At this grade level, coins display their original luster with only the smallest flaws. Any marks are minor and generally not noticeable in the central design areas.

Obverse

The obverse of each 2006 American Eagle Coin displays Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty design. First used on the half dollar in 1916, this image is one of the most well-known works in American coinage history and stayed on the half dollar through 1947. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2006.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2006 1 oz Silver Eagle coins shows John Mercantis Heraldic Eagle design. Taking inspiration from early American motifs, Mercantis version became the standard reverse for the Silver Eagle series until 2021. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR, and the respective W or P mint marks.

History

The 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle 3-Coin Set was released in honor of the series 20th anniversary and offers three distinct versions. These include the Proof Silver Eagle from the West Point Mint with a W mint mark, the one-time Reverse Proof Silver Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint with a P mint mark, and the Burnished Silver Eagle introduced in 2006. The Reverse Proof is unique for its frosted fields and mirrored design elements, while the Burnished version has a satin-like finish created through special minting steps.
