To celebrate the series 20th anniversary in 2006, the Mint introduced a special Reverse Proof Gold Eagle. Obverse

The obverse of the 2006-W Reverse Proof American Gold Eagle features the well-known design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It shows Lady Liberty advancing forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, set against a backdrop of radiant sunrays and stars. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY, 2006, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2006-W 1 oz Reverse Proof Gold Eagle Coin displays Miley Busieks depiction of a family of bald eagles. The design shows a nesting female with her hatchlings while a male eagle soars above them. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.

History

The Gold Eagle Series started in 1986 with BU coins offered in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes. That same year, the Proof Gold Eagle line began with only a 1 oz coin. The Mint later added the 1/2 oz Proof in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proofs in 1988. In 2006, to celebrate 20 years of the series, the Mint introduced both a Burnished Gold Eagle and this one-year-only Reverse Proof Gold Eagle.
