Obverse

The obverse side of 2007 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins features a depiction of the coat of arms for Somalia. The design includes a crowned shield with a background field of horizontal lines and a single star set in the center. Leopards flank the shield on either side with spears and fern leaves crossed below. Inscriptions include Somali Republic, 2007, and 100 Shillings.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the 2007 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin is a vision of an African bush elephant mother with her young calf. The African bush elephant lives in family units known as herds that typically include six to ten, but can grow to include as many as 25 elephants. The herds are matriarchal in nature, with the family unit lead by the eldest female of the group, her daughters, and the calves of the daughters. Other females may also join the group for security.

History

The 2007 release of the Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver coin was unique in the series in that it marked one of the first changes for the coin since the switch from Zambia to Somalia. From 2004 to 2006, the coins were issued by the Bavarian State Mint with a face value of 1,000 Shillings. This year marked the first release of the coins with a 100 Shilling face value.
