Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2008 1 oz Year of the Mouse Coin is a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrayal, the fourth-generation design from Royal Mint of England coins, was crafted by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. It’s the fifth image of the Queen to grace Australian coinage, depicting her adorned with a more understated crown than previous designs. Inscriptions read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1 DOLLAR, 2008, IRB, and 1 OZ 999 SILVER.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2008 Silver Year of the Mouse Coin features the depiction of two rats amidst straw, with two pumpkins visible in the background. The rat leads the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac as it was the first to arrive at a meeting convened by the Jade Emperor at the Heavenly Gates. Thanks to the Oxs assistance, offering a ride in its ear, the rat managed to overcome a swift river. As they neared the Heavenly Gates, the rat leaped from the Ox, landing foremost at the Emperors feet. Inscriptions include 2008, and 1 OZ 999 SILVER.

The Lunar Series I collection, running from 1996 to 2007, commenced with the Year of the Rat design, aligning precisely with the 12-year cycle of the Lunar Calendar. It initiated with the Year of the Rat and concluded with the Year of the Pig. Subsequently, the Lunar Series II began with a 2008 Australian Silver Lunar Rat coin, signifying the transition from the Lunar Series I program to the introduction of the second collection.
