Global economies were going through some turbulent times in 2008. The first half of 2008 saw very typical numbers of American Eagle Gold coins sold. But July marked the start of a dramatic increase in sales that actually forced the US Mint to suspend gold coin sales in August for two weeks. When sales did resume, coins were rationed. Despite the suspension and the rationing, the total number of American Eagle Gold coins sold in 2008 places it in the top ten highest sales years in the coins history. Currently, Provident Metals has a 2008 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin ready to be purchased.

Highlights:

  • Shipped in a protective plastic flip!
  • From the 23rd year of the American Eagle Gold coin series!
  • Consists of 1/4 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Possesses a face value of $10 (USD) fully backed by the American government.
  • The obverse features a version of Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features an eagle family.

It is typical for the price of gold to go through numerous peaks and valleys during the year, with the ultimate desire to have the price per ounce at the end of the year higher than it was at the beginning of the year. Over the six-year period from 2000 through 2005, the increases in the closing price of gold were small, but increases nonetheless. In 2006, however, the closing price of gold increased quite substantially from 2005 to 2006 and from 2006 to 2007.

However, in 2008, the Global economy suffered through some turbulent times. While the price per ounce of gold soared as high as $1,011.25 in March and sunk as low as $712.50 in October, the closing price of gold increased only $46.50 over 2007, a much smaller increase than the previous two years. This did, however, continue the upward trend in the price per ounce of gold that was occurring in the early 2000s.

Obverse

The Augustus Saint-Gaudens version of Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse of this 2008 American Eagle Gold coin. This design depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty, who appears to be walking right to you. Her hair is flowing in the breeze. She has a torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.

Reverse

The reverse of this 2008 American Eagle Gold was created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. It depicts the importance of family in America by a male eagle, hanging onto an olive branch in its claws, that is flying towards its family in a nest. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.

History

President Theodore Roosevelt decided that the US coinage had become artistically dull. In 1904, to remedy this, he inquired into the possibility of retaining the talents of Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a new design that would return the US coins to a condition of beauty. Saint-Gaudens accepted the Presidents invitation, and it is a version of Saint-Gaudens Liberty design that now appears on the American Eagle Gold coin.
