The Australian Kangaroo Gold coin is one of the Perth Mints most highly collected gold coins worldwide, sought by collectors, investors, and wildlife enthusiasts. These 24-karat gold coins are popular due to their great artistry and their crisp clear, high-relief designs. They are the signature gold bullion coins of Australia and are considered legal tender. Currently, Provident Metals has the 2008 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Gold coin available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • Total of 63,429 sold in 2008!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Face value of $100 (AUD), backed by the Australian government.
  • Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse.
  • A Kangaroo is on the reverse.
  • Includes a P mint mark from the Perth Mint.

The 2008 Australian Kangaroo Gold coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz weights. A total of 136,872 of these coins were sold in 2008.

Obverse

A profile of Queen Elizabeth II is the obverse of the 2008 Australian Kangaroo Gold coin. Created by Ian Rank-Broadley, and introduced in 1998, this is the fourth effigy of Her Majesty. Rank-Broadley said he chose to depict the Queen in a more realistic manner, as opposed to the more common, idealistic way. Inscriptions included are ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA 2008, and 100 DOLLARS.

Reverse

A kangaroo and its joey, romping through the grassland, is the reverse of the 2008 Australian Kangaroo Gold coin. Previously known as the Australian Nugget Gold coin, in 1990 it was changed to the Australian Kangaroo Gold coin. This was done because the recognizability of the kangaroo as a symbol of Australia is greater than of the nugget. The specific design of the kangaroo is modified each year. The P mint mark is included on the reverse. Inscriptions included are AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO and 1 OZ. 9999 GOLD

History

Under the jurisdiction of Great Britain, the Perth Mint opened in 1899. In spite of the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, the Perth Mint remained under the authority of Great Britain until 1970. The Gold Corporation Act of 1987 empowered the Mint to mint, make, issue, buy, sell, distribute and otherwise deal in coins containing gold. It was at this point that the Australian Nugget Gold Coin Series was launched.
