Starting that year, the Mexican Mint began producing the coins in five sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz. All five weights have been issued annually since then. Each 2008 Proof Mexican Libertad 1/10 oz Gold Coin comes in a plastic capsule for protection. The mintage for this size was limited to 500 coins, equal to the totals for the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/20 oz versions. The 1/4 oz coin had a slightly higher mintage of 800. These coins feature frosted visuals with mirrored backgrounds.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2008 Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coin includes Mexicos national coat of arms. The central image shows a golden eagle in left-profile view with its wings outstretched. The eagle stands on a cactus as it holds a snake in its beak and talon, a design rooted in Aztec heritage.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2008 Proof Libertad 1/10 oz Gold Coins is the image of Winged Victory. This statue is part of the Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. In the background, the volcanic peaks of Popocatpetl and Iztacchuatl can be seen rising behind the figure.

History

Before 2004, only two versions of the Proof Gold Libertad had been issued. The first came in 1983 with a 1 oz release, and a second followed in 1989 featuring 704 coins in the 1/2 oz size. There were no further Proof Gold Libertad releases until the series restarted in 2004.
