The Burnished Platinum Eagle is one of the lesser-seen coins in the American Eagle Series. Introduced in 2006, Burnished versions of the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle were created as collectible alternatives, featuring a special matte finish. This finish was achieved by tumbling the blanks with a polishing medium that burnished the coin. While Burnished Silver and Gold Eagles continue to be issued, Burnished Platinum Eagles were only produced from 2006 to 2008. Obverse
The obverse of 2008-W Burnished American Eagle Platinum Coins features John Mercantis detailed portrait of the Statue of Liberty. Designed in 1997 for the Platinum Eagle Series, this image showcases a forward-facing view of Libertys face, with her crown prominently filling the design field. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2008, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2008-W Burnished Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coin, the last design in the Foundations of Democracy Series is presented. This collection of designs, issued from 2006 to 2008, depicted symbols representing the three branches of the federal government. The 2008 design highlights the Judicial Branch with an image of Lady Justice standing alongside an American bald eagle. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1/4 OZ., .9995 PLATINUM, $25, and the W mint mark.
History
The U.S. Mint released Burnished Platinum Eagles in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights from 2006 to 2008. After 2008, all fractional-ounce Platinum Eagles were discontinued, and the Burnished Platinum Eagle Series was retired. The 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle had the lowest mintage in its weight class across the series and ranks as the second-lowest mintage overall, following only the 2008-W 1/2 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle.
