Obverse

The obverse of the 2008-W Proof First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coin showcases the iconic Seated Liberty design. As President Van Buren was a bachelor, this coin commemorates him with the popular Liberty design of his era, skillfully crafted by Christian Gobrecht. The Seated Liberty design graced various silver denominations in the US currency, from the half dime and dime to the quarter, half dollar, and dollar. Inscriptions read 8TH PRESIDENCY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1837-1841, 2008, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse side of the coin features a young Martin Van Buren, seated by the trunk of a tree, deeply engrossed in political writings. Van Buren’s family home served as a pivotal center for political discourse during his upbringing, laying the foundation for his future career in politics. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

During Van Buren’s presidency, Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836, and its leaders sought annexation to the United States. Van Buren, concerned about the potential for the spread of slavery and its impact on the balance of power between slave and free states, chose not to pursue Texas annexation. He worried that admitting Texas as a slave state could reignite sectional tensions, and his decision contributed to his failure to secure re-election in 1840.
