Despite these hardships, Van Buren’s impact on American history remains profound.

Obverse

As President Van Buren was unmarried, the First Spouse Series uniquely features the iconic Seated Liberty design on the obverse of 2008-W First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coins. Crafted by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, in 1836, this timeless image portrays Liberty seated on a rock, holding a staff with a Phrygian cap, and with her right hand resting atop the US national shield. Inscriptions here include 8TH PRESIDENCY, 1837-1841, W, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2008-W US Mint Van Buren’s Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coin, President Van Buren is depicted seated beneath a tree near his family home a significant gathering place for open political discourse during his lifetime. The inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ, and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

The issue of Texas annexation and its potential impact on the balance between slave and free states was a contentious one during Van Buren’s presidency. Van Buren, concerned about the potential for sectional conflict, opposed the annexation of Texas. This stance, however, cost him support in the South and contributed to his failure to secure re-election in 1840.
