The first .9999 pure gold coins produced by the US Mint, the American Buffalo Gold coins are now in their fourth year. They are investment grade coins, due to their weight, content, and purity being guaranteed by the US government. Both the Bullion and Proof coins are struck at the West Point Mint, however, only the Proof coin carries the W mint mark. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2009 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold coin available for purchase.
Highlights:
The production suspension of American Buffalo Gold coins in late 2008 carried over into 2009. The 2009 Buffalo Gold bullion coins did not become available for purchase until October 15th, and as a result of the pent-up demand for them, sales were so strong right from the start that by December 4th the US Mint had sold its entire inventory of 200,000 coins. This took less than 2 months!
Obverse
The profile of a Native American Chief is spotlighted on the obverse of the American Buffalo Gold coin. Originally created by James Earle Fraser for the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel, this profile is considered to be a composite of 3 Chiefs – Chief Two Moons, Chief John Big Tree, and Chief Iron Tail. This design is known by collectors as Frasers 1913, Type I design. The Buffalo Nickels obverse, having been regarded as one of the best designs on a US coin, led to its selection as the obverse of the Buffalo Gold coin. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2009.
Reverse
The profile of an American Buffalo is spotlighted on the reverse of the American Buffalo Gold coin. Created by James Earle Fraser, it was originally designed for the Buffalo Nickel. Central Park Zoos Black Diamond, the massive American buffalo, is believed to be Frasers inspiration for the buffalo profile. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and $50.
History
The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 authorized the US Mint to produce the first US coin made of one ounce .9999 pure gold. Investors generally preferred .9999 pure gold coins, but the US had only the .9167 American Eagle Gold coin to offer them. The creation of the Buffalo Gold coins allowed the US to keep pace with other countries, such as Canada and China, who already had 24 karat gold coin options for investors to purchase. The Act also mandated that the obverse and reverse designs of the Buffalo Nickel be used as the obverse and reverse of the American Buffalo Gold coin series.
