Obverse

The obverse side of 2009 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins comes with a depiction of Walking Liberty. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the image shows Lady Liberty in left-profile relief walking from right to left across the design field. Draped in the American flag, Liberty walks with her right hand extended to the horizon and branches of oak and laurel in her left hand. Inscriptions on this face include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2009.

Reverse

On the reverse field of 2009 American Eagle Silver Coins, you will find the depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The heraldic eagle of the United States was first designed in 1792 by Robert Scot, 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The design shows the front-facing bald eagle in support of the US national shield. The eagle clutches an olive branch of peace in one talon, looking toward it, while clutching the arrows of war in the other talon. A triangular cluster of 13 stars over its head represent the original colonies that formed the United States. Inscriptions include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar.

History

When released in 2009, the American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin set a temporary record for single-year mintage. The 1987 release had long held the mintage record at 11 million coins. In 2008, the series surpassed that with 20.5 million coins. The 2009 coin again surpassed the record at 30.4 million, but that would be surpassed again, in order, in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015.
